I've had the same issue with my macbook pro 17' 2011, where, when booting, the progress bar would fill up to about 50% and then I would have a blank white screen. I also had similar random vertical lines appear on my screen doing this faulty boot.

I didn't have any luck with either SMC or PRAM resets, so instead this was what worked for me and got me through the white screen:

Reset .AppleSetup:

- Shut off your mac

- Turn on your mac and hold (cmd + s) to start it up in single-user mode, aka the terminal log

- After the log initialises and you have something something 'root:'

- Type: 'sbin/fsck -fy' press enter and let it run through until you see 'root:' again

- Type: 'sbin/mount -uw' press enter, and it should give you two lines of text with something about 'read-only, nobrowse'

- Type: 'touch /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone' press enter.

- Type: 'exit' press enter, and your macbook should exit the log, and go back to the correct startup sequence.
