Back in December I received a Cr-48 by signing up for Google’s pilot program. It’s a little laptop that runs Google’s new Chrome OS. I was not expecting to actually get one and needless to say, I was excited and surprised when it showed up on my doorstep. It was completely free and I get to keep it. The only thing Google asks is that you provide feedback and report bugs from time to time.
Chrome OS was designed with the idea that most people nowadays spend their computer time online, in a browser. As such, the only “program” in Chrome OS is Google’s web browser: Chrome. This may sound like very primitive machine but there is more than meets the eye.
Chrome OS intends for you to store all your files online, in the “cloud”. That’s why there is not much storage space on the computer itself. These files can then be accessed anywhere, from any computer, which is quite convenient. Web apps take the place of programs. These run in the browser and perform many of the same things that traditional Windows or Mac programs do. Google Docs for example handles word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows, and many other things of that nature. Also, since the operating system is very lightweight, the laptop boots in about 10 seconds and wakes up from sleep mode instantly. It’s always ready when you are.

Can you see yourself using a machine like this? Do you think that Chrome OS will take off or fade quickly? Would you be comfortable keeping all your files online?
Mac Os Catalina
Dec 26, 2017 Shut down your Mac, turn it on while holding down Command+R. Your Mac will boot into the recovery partition. If you’re using an older Mac (from 2010 or earlier), there’s a chance that you can’t use Recovery Mode. On those devices, hold “Option” while turning your computer on, then select the recovery partition instead.
Personally, a Chrome OS device could never replace my desktop which I need for heavy tasks like music production and video editing. However, I’m on my Cr-48 for the majority of my computer time – checking Facebook and even keeping up with my classes on BlackBoard and Moodle. A person who just wants to use the web would find Chrome OS to fit their needs perfectly.
